It was going to be a slamfest! All the reports from the prior weekend were awesome! We were headed to a place none of us had fished before, and we were PUMPED! Headed out from my house at 5:30 Friday afternoon on the 3 1/2 hour drive to Sekiu, WA. Sekiu is a small fishing community on Clallam Bay on the Washington penninsula...almost the extreme
upper west side of it.
We got there about 9:45 and launched the boat. We moored up at Olson's Resort, had a couple drinks and laughs, and turned in for the evening.
Alarm went off at 3:45 sharp! We were quickly up and ready to catch some monsters! As we got up, we noticed something odd...a fog had set in, and we could barely see 50 feet! There were boats headed out, so we marked our position on the GPS and went for it. We soon (well...not that soon) found a spot to start fishing, and dropped the downriggers in. It was quite an experience driving the boat by depth finder alone, but we managed.
Around 8am we finally got our first hit! Josh reeled in a 14lb King Salmon! That was the end of our luck for salmon though, the rest of the trip turned up none. However...we did catch more fish. Oddly enough, Josh and I each reeled in a 20+lb halibut! They were out of season though, so we had to throw them back. Alex caught a keeper Copper Fish, and we also got a true cod and a small Ling (that also had to be thrown back.
Tried crabbing as well....nothing. We didn't know the area, and saw no other pots. We threw the pots in, but there was nothing in them but a starfish at the end of the day.
We broke stuff this trip! Nothing to complain about, things happen, but they were starting to add up and get frustrating. A rock kicked up and broke a trailer light on the way there, we got into some pretty rough water and put the downrigger cable in the kicker motor's prop, and the ,ain engine was acting like it had water in the gas. To top it off, the fog really didn't burn off all day! So, after a long day, we decided to head back home to my house. We had a great time hanging with each other as usual, saw a part of WA that we had never seen, and caught fish. And most importantly, we stayed safe enough to make it home alive!! There's some BIG water out there in Sekiu...
